Arran Strong

Arran Strong (1998–2026) was a British professional surfer based in Portugal who competed on the World Surf League Qualifying Series and represented Great Britain at the 2024 and 2025 ISA World Surf Games. Born with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a rare genetic lung disorder, he became an advocate for rare disease awareness while inspiring others through his surfing career.

In July 2026, Strong disappeared while stand-up paddleboarding along Portugal's southwest coast during a long-distance sea crossing with his coach, José Maria Pyrrait. His surfboard was found drifting in the water, but despite an extensive air and sea search by Portuguese authorities, he was not located. After several days, the search was called off and he was presumed dead at the age of 28. His passing prompted tributes from GB Surfing, teammates, and the international surfing community, who remembered him for his talent, resilience, and kindness.
